On a brisk Saturday morning, Centreville's high school cross country teams took on the Gobles Invitational and its very challenging 3.1-mile course — hills so steep they have names. The boys came home with the first-place trophy. The boys scored 32 points to win the 12-team meet, ahead of Hart (39) and Buchanan (79). Will Hulin won the race in 16:38.8, Max Reed was 2nd and Nick Overweg 3rd — Bulldogs in the top three spots. Will Swanwick was 8th and Tanner Bingaman 18th to complete the scoring five, with Landon Weis 21st and Oliver Mildenberg 28th right behind. The girls placed 4th of 7 teams with 89 points, behind Gobles (44), Buchanan (62) and Niles (72). Emily Falkenstein was 10th in 22:15.7 and Addison Johnson 12th, followed by Norah Lammon, Hazel Sloat and Matilda Roberts as the scoring five. Two Bulldogs earned special recognition. Clay Broker finished in 19:48, just 5 seconds off his personal best. And Matilda Roberts had the race of the day: a 24:07 on that tough course, just 3 seconds off the best time of her career. To come that close to a personal best after four years of competition is worth a huge shout-out.
